Events in the Tuscia

The Tuscia calendar never stops: seventy-four food festivals, processions and traditional feasts across thirty-four towns, plus early music festivals, medieval re-enactments and exhibitions inside the Farnese palaces. Sleeping inside the walls of Viterbo means reaching most of these within an hour, and walking home in the evening when the old town is closed to traffic.

The fixed dates of the year

• Transport of the Macchina di Santa Rosa, 3 September: one hundred porters carry a thirty-metre tower on their shoulders through Viterbo. UNESCO intangible heritage. In the days before: the Novena, the Mini Macchine, the historical parade and the Procession of the Heart; the fair follows on 4 September.
• Alessandro Stradella Baroque Festival, late August to September: early music in churches, palaces and gardens across Viterbo, Nepi, Caprarola and Oriolo Romano.
• Medieval Ottava of Orte, late August to early September: two weeks of historical parades, districts and the Archers' Palio.
• Chestnut Festival in Soriano nel Cimino, October: historical re-enactment and chestnuts every weekend.
• Palio della Tonna in Civita di Bagnoregio: the donkey race in the village square.
• Bean Festival in Sutri, late August, in the shade of the Roman amphitheatre.
• Civita Jazz Festival, late August: concerts in the dying town.
• Divino Etrusco in Tarquinia and Est! Est!! Est!!! in Montefiascone: the two great wine events of the Tuscia.
• Ludika 1243 and Caffeina in Viterbo: medieval games in summer, a cultural festival in the historic palaces.
